Simple Tips for Online Safety
- Harmful information is often sent out in
unsolicited e-mails, called “spam.” Therefore, children
should never open e-mail from an unknown source, especially
if it has an attachment.
- It’s preferable to not use first and last name; use
nicknames instead.
- If your children have their own e-mail or other
communication account, do not let them set up a public
profile that provides personal information such as name,
address, photos, school name, hobbies, etc. to others.
According to the eMarketer, 75% of children are willing to
share personal information online about themselves and their
family in exchange for goods and services. Just as you
wouldn’t give this information to a stranger on the street,
you shouldn't give it to a stranger online. Those with
criminal intent can use this information to find your child.
- Never share passwords with others online, even friends.
- Make sure your children understand they are never to agree
to meet with an online friend in person alone. Let
your children know that not everyone they meet online is a
nice person or is even honest about who they really are.
- Remember, this really is something that is in your
control. You do have permission to protect your children!
